Screen-Free Activity Ideas for Home and Classroom

Forest Animals Clue Bingo (Grades 2-4) – printable PDF cover

A printable is one of the easiest screen-free activities there is: print, hand over a pencil, done. These ideas need nothing more than a printer and a few crayons.

At home

  1. Breakfast page. Put a coloring page or an Easy maze next to the cereal bowl.
  2. Travel folder. A clipboard, a pencil case and a few word searches for the car or plane.
  3. Restaurant kit. One I Spy page and two crayons in a bag, for the wait before food arrives.
  4. Rainy-day choice. Let the child pick between a maze, a coloring page and I Spy.
  5. Family game night. Bingo with 8 different cards works for the whole family.
  6. Sibling match-up. Give each child the same theme at their own level: large print for the younger one, Grades 2-4 for the older one.

In the classroom or homeschool

  1. Morning work. One math page that matches the current unit.
  2. Early finishers. A labelled folder of Easy and Medium puzzles.
  3. Class party. Holiday bingo keeps a whole class busy and calm.
  4. Theme week. One theme, a different activity each day: math, crossword, coloring.
  5. Quiet corner. Coloring pages for kids who need a break.
  6. Sub plan. A set with its answer key is a ready lesson for a substitute.

Set up a simple activity station

Choose one shelf or tray. Put out one or two pages and only the tools they need: pencils for a maze, crayons for coloring, counters for bingo. Read the instructions together the first time and point to the START of a maze or the first item of a puzzle. Keep the answer pages with the grown-up. At the end, return the pencils, wipe any reusable pockets and swap in a new page for next time.

Keep it low-prep

Print only the pages you need, stop before a child gets frustrated, and supervise scissors and small pieces. A short, finished activity is better than half of a long pack.
